Green and left -wing report wave

Thousands of people have joined the two parties in the past few days. And both see the same reason.
The Greens and the left report an entry wave in the past few days. “Over 5,000 membership applications in just 5 days – that is a new record,” said the political managing director of the Greens, Pegah Edalatian, the German press agency. The explanation from her point of view: “Many people are shocked by the collaboration of Friedrich Merz with the AfD.”
For the same reason, left-wing boss Ines Schwerdtner sees a similar development in her party. After the joint vote of Union and AfD in the Bundestag last Wednesday, the left -wing registered 1,151 applications for membership nationwide within 24 hours. In the following days it was just under 5,900. As of Monday morning, the party counted 71,277 members, as many as last in 2010. At the party congress on January 18, it was only 60,060.
Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz (CDU) had made an application to limit migration to vote in the Bundestag on Wednesday, which only received a majority because the AfD also agreed. On Friday, the adoption of a law with a similar thrust failed despite the AfD votes due to a lack of votes from the CDU/CSU and FDP.
On request, an SPD spokesman said that there have been “thousands of online entries” in the past few weeks without explaining this in more detail. At the turn of the year, the SPD had 365,190 members. The other Bundestag parties initially gave no information on the recent development of their membership numbers. The AfD named the number as of December 31, 2024: 51,370. In mid -November, the AfD still had 50,000 members.
