Trump wants to establish US aid for Ukraine on raw materials

Raw materials instead of solidarity: The US President sees Ukraine as a business partner, not as an ally – and throws an eye on the mineral resources of the country attacked by Russia.

In return, President Donald Trump calls access to valuable raw materials from the country for the extensive US aid to Ukraine. “I want to have security with the rare earths,” said the Republican in Washington. “We invest hundreds of billions dollars. They have great rare earths.” He stated that Ukraine was “ready to do this.”

In this context, Trump once again criticized his democratic predecessor Joe Biden. “Biden never asked for money. He never said: You have to pay. He just distributed money,” said Trump. In contrast, he is working with the Ukrainian government to complete “some deals” to secure guarantees for US support.

At the same time, Trump accused the European Union again not to contribute enough to support Ukraine. “Europe cannot keep up with us. You should pull the same,” he said. “It is more important for them than for us, but they are financially inferior to us. They should pay at least as much.”

Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia’s war of aggression for almost three years and is dependent on western military aid. The United States was the most important supporter and largest arms supplier in Ukraine under bidges. Trump had repeatedly questioned the help during the election campaign.
