Ribbing, insults, foam cakes: politicians have to endure a lot. New data on violence show how much – and where politicians are particularly affected.
According to a report, the attacks on MPs and other officials and mandate bearers increased last year. As the newspapers of the editorial network in Germany (RND) reported on Tuesday, citing the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Criminal Police Office recorded 4923 crimes by the end of the year. In 2023 it was 4047 such acts on the same key date. The RND referred to the answer to a parliamentary request from the left-wing members of the Bundestag Martina Renner.
Local politicians more often affected by violence
The aim of the attacks is mayors, district councilors, city councilors or deputies. According to the BKA, most of these crimes took place in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, followed by North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin. According to the report, the number can still increase because the police departments of the federal states were able to register the corresponding acts from the end of the year that has come to the BKA until the end of January.
The left-wing politician Renner warned “permanent agitation against democratic institutions” inspired a wide wave of attacks on mandate. “Every 4 days a violent attack and a fifth of more crimes show that often only the confrontation is sought,” she complained.
In the past five years, the German security authorities have registered around 10,500 attacks on politicians. In addition, there are almost 2500 arson attacks or other damage to buildings of the parties represented in the Bundestag. These figures arise from a response from the Federal Government to a request from the AfD parliamentary group. In addition to the Greens, the parties and their representatives in parts of the right -wing extremists and their representatives are particularly often affected by attacks.
