Tajikistan: Long prison sentences for treason imposed

In the autocratic Republic of Tajikistan in Central Asia, the Supreme Court imposed draconian punishments in a secret process. It’s about an alleged coup d’état.

In the Central Asian Republic of Tajikistan, a trial against partially high -ranking politicians with long prison terms for those accused of the high treason came to an end behind closed doors. Among the convicts are ex-Secretary of State Chamrochona Sarifi and former head of parliament Akbarschoch Iskandarow, reported local media. The 76-year-old Sarifi was sentenced to 27 years in prison by the country’s highest court, the 73-year-old Iskandarov at 18 years.

Among the other convicts are journalists, former officials of the security apparatus and high party officials of the democratic and social democratic party of Tajikistan. Both parties are considered opposite the President Emomali Rachmon, which has been authoritative for more than 30 years. However, they only have a low influence. The Democratic Party of Tajikistan provides a MP in Parliament. Human rights activists repeatedly accuse Rachmon of corruption, personal cults and the persecution of political opponents.

More precise backgrounds of the case are not known. Most of the defendants were arrested last summer and have been behind bars since then, where they were also made. In addition to treason, violent seizures of power and partly fraud and national, racist or religious agitation are accused. All suspects have denied the allegations.
