Australia has a problem: anti -Semitism in the country is growing. The government is now taking consequences – and hopes that a new law will defuse the situation.
The Australian parliament has passed a amendment to the law that defines the minimum penalty for a number of offenses, including showing the Hitler salute. Among other things, the change in the law provides for a minimum penalty of one year in prison for the Hitler salute and three years for terrorist finance and six years for participation in a terrorist attack.
It was supported by the center-left majority of government and conservative opposition.
Australia’s anti-Semitism problem
Australia had recently been shaken by a number of anti -Semitic incidents. Last week, the police announced that they had found explosives in a caravan on the outskirts of Sydney and threatening letters against Jewish institutions.
In the previous months before, a daycare center in Sydney had set fire, a synagogue in Melbourne was attacked with fire bombs and sprayed Jewish residential areas with anti -Semitic graffiti.
Prime Minister declares a priority fight against anti -Semitism
The amendment to the law also tightens crimes in connection with the advocacy of violence and create new crimes for the threat of violence or the damage to property.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended his support for the mandatory minimum penalty, although his party actually rejects such measures. “We want people who are involved in anti -Semitic activities to be caught, accused and put into jail. That is my priority,” said the head of government.
