An advance by US President Trump to relocate around two million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip is international criticism. The Chancellor has now also commented.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected US President Donald Trump’s advance to relocate the Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. “What the President Trump put in the room finds my complete rejection. We are not allowed to move the population of Gaza to Egypt,” said the SPD politician at an election campaign event in Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg.

You have to do everything to ensure that there is no further escalation in the Middle East and that a peaceful coexistence of a Palestinian state and Israel come about, says Scholz.

In the presence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the US President announced that the USA would “take over” the Gaza Strip and transform it into an economically flourishing “Riviera of the Middle East”. According to Trump’s will, the residents of the area will in future be accommodated in other Arab countries in the region.

The statement met with criticism internationally. The US government later put Trump’s plans into perspective. “It wasn’t intended as an hostile step,” said Foreign Minister Marco Rubio. He spoke of a “very generous offer” by the president. The United States is only concerned with making the coastal area habitable again. During this time, the Palestinians could not live there.
