The designated FDP general secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai has called for a “concrete exit strategy” with clearly defined opening steps from the corona restrictions.
This must already be available if forecasts from experts are correct and the number of infections decreases again at the end of February, said Djir-Sarai of the German Press Agency.
“In addition, we must now ask ourselves whether certain restrictions on freedom are still effective and proportionate in the current situation, in which there is no increase in the number of corona patients in intensive care units despite the increasing number of cases,” Djir-Sarai continued. “I am thinking in particular of the 2G rules in retail. The 2G rule doesn’t apply in convenience stores and I could see lifting it for retail as well.”
In several federal states, shopping without proof of vaccination or recovery is already allowed again because courts had overturned the corresponding 2G rule. Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) announced that this rule would also be lifted in his state. Other prime ministers put the brakes on. Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) initially warned against sending the wrong signal on Tuesday and said that he did not see any debate about exit strategies before Easter. There are still a good ten weeks until Easter.
FDP leader Christian Lindner criticized Kretschmann for this line. He told the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Thursday): “If Mr. Kretschmann excludes any relaxation before Easter, this does not do justice to the situation.” Lindner demanded: “Instead, we should now prepare specifically for opening steps, for example with regard to trade fairs and larger events.”
After protests from business, the opposition and also from his own coalition partner, Kretschmann has softened his course again. In a statement on Wednesday, the Greens politician expressly promised easing by Easter if the corona situation improved.
