Only recently a study on sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising shook the Catholic Church. The experts assumed 497 victims. Other victims are now reporting.
About two weeks after the presentation of the report on sexual violence in the Catholic Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, 15 other victims reported to the diocese.
The independent contact persons for examining suspected cases have received “15 reports since the publication of the report, which according to the current status relate to the area of responsibility of the archdiocese,” said a spokeswoman for the diocese. It is about old and new cases with different relevance.
In addition, there are at least 95 calls to the newly established diocese hotline. However, these came not only from those allegedly affected, but also from “people who are struggling with the question of leaving the church or have a problem with the church and current events, for example because of the role of the Pope Emeritus,” said a spokeswoman. Other callers addressed events in their parishes that concern completely different topics.

The report had shown that cases of sexual abuse of children in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising had not been dealt with appropriately for decades. The report accuses the former archbishops Friedrich Wetter and Joseph Ratzinger, now Benedict XVI, of personal misconduct in several cases – as does the current archbishop, Cardinal Reinhard Marx.
The study assumes at least 497 victims and 235 alleged perpetrators – and from a much larger number of unreported cases. A number of cities and communities are now confronted with a flood of people leaving the church.
The Synodal Assembly, the central body of the reform process of the Catholic Church in Germany, meets for the third time in Frankfurt/Main today. It should be accompanied by the discussions about the abuse report.
