EU announces a new course for development aid

The new US government has ordered the temporary stop of development aid payments. Many now hope for the EU – but it does not see itself as a compliant gap filler.

The EU wants to compensate for the USA -decreasing development aid payments only under conditions and in selected cases. As the EU foreign commissioner Kaja Kallas said in an interview with the EnR news agency network, the means of filling all gaps are missing. In addition, European aids should also be used to expand geopolitical power in the future. For this purpose, payments could be linked, among other things, that the recipients communicate openly and clearly that they are supported by the EU.

The EU is currently supporting many organizations with significant means, but is hardly visible, complained Kallas. The current situation is an opportunity to make the European flag more visible and to show people where the support really comes from.

As an example, Kallas cited the Palestinian Authority and the UN aid for Palestinians (Unrwa). “We are the biggest supporters, but nobody knows that,” said the former Estonian head of government in an interview with the ENR, which also includes the German press agency. At the same time, there is a lot of criticism that the Palestinians are not supported enough.

If you provide financial help in the future, you have to become more visible, emphasized Kallas. Both the countries concerned and EU citizens should know that the European Union is internationally the partner who is reliable and predictable.

Organizations threatens US aids

The new US President Donald Trump had recently announced that the United States will withdraw from the financing of the UN aid organization for Palestinians. In addition, his government ordered a temporary stop from almost all development aid payments abroad. They are currently being checked and should only be resumed if they are “efficient” and match Trump’s “America First” strategy.

According to figures from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the United States in 2023 with public development aids of almost $ 65 billion (63 billion euros) worldwide. Together, however, the EU and its Member States even came to just under 96 billion euros in the same period. According to EU, Germany contributed around 34 billion euros.
