According to Trump’s regulation, Google renames the entire Gulf of Mexico in its map service. Mexico’s President does not want to watch.
Mexico is considering a lawsuit against Google on the map service Google due to the renaming of the entire Gulf of Mexico in “Golf of America”. The renaming ordered by US President Donald Trump only applies to the coastal sea of the United States, said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. That is why the company was asked in writing to respect the historical name of the water for the non-US-American part in its map service. If Google insists on the far -reaching name change, Mexico will proceed with a civil lawsuit.
“The only place that the United States can rename is where it exercises sovereignty,” said Sheinbaum. So this is exclusively the twelve-seamile zone in front of the US coast. Trump did not order to change the name of the entire water, said the President.
Only the new name in the USA is displayed
Trump had ordered the renaming shortly after taking office. Google has changed the name in its map service accordingly. Users in the United States are displayed as Gulf of America, elsewhere, both names can be seen. Users outside the United States are shown the traditional name first and the new next to it in brackets.
The name Golf of Mexico has been used since the 16th century. The water not only borders on the US states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, but also on Mexico and Cuba. According to Trump’s decree, the name change for the area up to the maritime boundaries of Mexico and Cuba applies.
