Friedrich Merz has again rejected a coalition with the AfD in the ZDF program “Clar Text”. This time, the CDU chairman Alice Weidel could even say it directly.
Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz (CDU) confirmed in the ZDF election program “Plain Text” that he would not coalize with the AfD in the event of an election by the CDU/CSU. “We only made one decision firmly: with you,” he said on Thursday evening about AfD Chancellor candidate Alice Weidel. “I only hear from the AfD that she wants to destroy the CDU and we will fight against it.”
“Get out of the European Union, out of NATO, out of the euro,” said Merz about the AfD election program. However, the two institutions and the euro are “the history of my party, the history of the Federal Republic of Germany – and we do not question them”.
Friedrich Merz: We are so far apart
The CDU boss emphasized: “In these questions, we are as far apart as far as no other party in the German Bundestag.” The AfD is a party “which is openly right -wing extremist who is open to foreigners”.
On the concept of the fire wall between the CDU and AfD, Merz said: “I don’t use this term.” Because he believes that “we have to fight the fire behind the wall”.
The Union Chancellor candidate referred to countries such as Austria in which parties tried to “work with right-wing populist, right-wing extremist parties” such as the FPÖ. However, the FPÖ is now the strongest force in parliament.
