Education: Corona situation in schools – offer of talks to students

Because of the corona situation in schools, student representatives have written an open letter asking politicians to take action. They accuse her of letting students down. Now there are talks.

Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) and the President of the Conference of Ministers of Education, Karin Prien (CDU), have offered talks to student representatives about the Corona situation at schools.

“It is important to me that the students and their representatives know that they are being seen and heard,” Stark-Watzinger wrote on Twitter. Your offer to talk to the federal student conference is standing. “I’m happy to exchange ideas with other student representatives about the situation in the schools,” she added.

The Schleswig-Holstein Minister of Education and current KMK President Karin Prien made a similar statement: “There is a regular exchange between student, parent and teacher representatives at state level with the education ministries,” she wrote on Twitter. Immediately after taking office, she also offered talks to the federal student conference. “If you would like to speak outside of the elected student representatives, I would be happy to invite you personally.” Prien offered “full transparency” and a live stream of the conversation “so that everyone can watch”.

Almost 500,000 corona and quarantine cases

The Conference of Ministers of Education presented new figures on the situation in schools. According to this, almost 500,000 corona and quarantine cases were known among schoolchildren in the past week (previous week around 360,000). That was about five percent of the total number of around ten million schoolchildren on which the statistics are based. The basis is feedback from the federal states.

However, the data only provide a rough overview. Berlin no longer reports any numbers. Reason: “Quick tests carried out at school are no longer confirmed by PCR tests, so that no valid data are available.” There is no data on quarantine cases from Hamburg and Lower Saxony.

Around 20,000 corona or quarantine cases were known among the approximately 900,000 teachers last week (previous week 15,000). Of the more than 28,000 schools that are included in the statistics, 14 across Germany were not in attendance (previous week 10). At around 1800 there were restrictions (previous week 1600).
