Friedrich Merz in the TV Quadrell in the RTL and N-TV broadcaster is in favor of a smartphone ban at primary schools. Alice Weidel is similar.
Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz is at least for younger children for a smartphone ban in schools. That has already been tried and tested in Schleswig-Holstein, “it seems to me to be a reasonable answer, at least for primary school,” said Merz in the round of four of the chancellor candidates with the broadcasters RTL and N TV.
The AfD candidate for chancellor Alice Weidel also advocated such a ban. The Chancellor candidates of the SPD and the Greens, Olaf Scholz and Robert Habeck, rejected it. The question was: “Smartphone ban in schools, yes or no?”
Merz spoke out earlier for smartphone ban at primary schools
As early as 2023, the CDU in a position paper for education demands that “a private ban on mobile phone use in primary schools”. At secondary schools, “measures must be taken to rule out private cell phone use in class”. The spread of violence videos, bullying among pupils and the propaganda of extremists could be better cured, it said at the time.
In some European countries there are already such bans. In Germany, schools can decide for themselves how they regulate the handling of smartphones: they can collect cell phones before class or prohibit use in the school yard. However, they may be carried in the backpack.
