Denmark sets a billion dollar fund for quick upgrade

Denmark has come under pressure from the Greenland savings by US President Trump, but primarily perceives a threat from Russia. Now the German neighbor is considering considerably.

NATO member Denmark sets up a billion-dollar upgrade fund from concern before Russia. In this and next year, Germany’s northernmost neighboring country, with the so -called acceleration fund, wants to put a total of around 50 additional billions of crowns (EUR 6.7 billion) in the rapid procurement of defense goods, as the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced at a press conference in Copenhagen.

The message to the head of the Danish armed forces, Michael Hyldgaard, is: “Buy, buy, buy!” Said Frederiksen. The only thing that counts is pace. As a result, more than three percent of the Danish gross domestic product for defense will be spent in 2025 and 2026 – this is the highest level in over half a century, said the head of government.

Denmark has recently come under pressure from the desires expressed by US President Donald Trump in terms of control over Greenland. Trump claimed that the six-million inhabitant country could never defend the largest island in the earth belonging to the Danish kingdom. At the same time, Trump has been demanding for some time that the NATO allies of his country have to put significantly more money in defense.

However, the billion -dollar fund is justified in Copenhagen with the perceived threat by Russia. According to the Danish intelligence service, Russia could be ready for a large-scale war in Europe within five years in the event of a war end in Ukraine, provided that the United States would not participate in the NATO countries.

The FE does not see any concrete Russian plans for a war against a NATO country. Against this background, Frederiksen emphasized that one had to upgrade massively to protect Denmark and to avoid a war.
