Herbert Mertin was a veteran of the FDP in Rhineland-Palatinate. He shaped the judicial department for many years. Now he has died surprisingly.
The FDP politician and Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of Justice Herbert Mertin is dead. The 66-year-old died suddenly and unexpectedly in Koblenz on Friday, a spokesman for the FDP state association said.
Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) and Minister of Economic Affairs Daniela Schmitt (FDP) recognized Mertin “as an outstanding representative of democratic values and a formative personality of Rhineland-Palatinate politics”. The state had shaped his tireless commitment to freedom, justice and the rule of law. “Our thoughts and our deep sympathy are with his family and his relatives.”
In 1996, Mertin moved into the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament in Mainz as a member of the Rhineland. In 1999 he was appointed to the successor of Justice Minister Peter Caesar (FDP), who has resigned for health reasons, by the then Prime Minister Kurt Beck (SPD).
“Herbert Mertin was a fixed pillar of our democracy”
After the 2006 state election, when the SPD won the absolute majority, Mertin switched from the government to the opposition bank. In 2016 he again took over the judicial department at the SPD, FDP and Greens’ traffic light coalition.
“Herbert Mertin was a fixed pillar of our democracy,” emphasized Schweitzer. “He was a clever and integrative politician, a respected lawyer and, above all, a person who was a heart of the heart. His loss weighs difficult – for our country and for everyone who appreciated him.”
Mertin was born in Chile in 1958
Schmitt told the German Press Agency that she always perceived Mertin as a rock in the surf, working with him for a few years in the extra-parliamentary opposition. “For me, he was always a strong and reliable partner and advisor.”
The Liberale was born in Temuco in Chilean in 1958. He first attended the German School in Santiago de Chile. He graduated from Linz on the Rhine. After military service, he studied law in Mainz and Bonn. He leaves a woman and four adult sons.
