The knife attack on a tourist at the Holocaust memorial is shaken and outraged all of Germany. In Berlin, politicians demand hard consequences for the alleged perpetrator.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser was horrified by the presumably anti -Semitic attack on a Spanish tourist in Berlin. “The knife attack on the Berlin Holocaust memorial is a hideous and brutal crime,” said the SPD politician, according to the announcement.
She demanded that the alleged perpetrator had to be punished with all hardness and “deported directly from custody”. “Anyone who commits such acts and abuses protection in Germany has been the most disgusting to be forfeited all the right to be in our country.” She announced that she was using all the paths “to put violent offenders back to Syria”. Faeser wished the injured “that he can get well again”. She thanked the emergency services of the Berlin police and the rescue workers.
Berlin’s governing mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) sentenced the presumably anti -Semitic attack as a coward. “I am convinced that our judiciary will give the perpetrator of his just punishment,” he said. “At the same time, it is clear to me that if you want to have protection in Germany, you don’t attack people with the knife.”
Attack at the Holocaust memorial in Berlin
On Friday evening, a 19-year-old recognized refugee from Syria presumably attacked the Spanish visitor from behind with a knife in the Stelenfeld of the Holocaust memorial and injured it life-threatening. According to the previous state of knowledge, the attacker’s goal was to kill Jews, the public prosecutor said. Against this background, the crime scene was also selected.

The alleged attacker was registered in Saxony. Wegner therefore announced a close exchange with the Saxon and the federal authorities. “I expect the next federal government to ensure that such perpetrators will lose their protection status and quickly have to leave our country,” the government said.
Interior Senator calls attack “unbearable”
Berlin’s Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) also condemned the presumably anti -Semitic attack on a Spanish tourist in Berlin. “An attempted homicide with the suspicion of anti -Semitic motivation, especially at the monument to the murdered Jews in Europe – that is unbearable,” she said. Her thoughts are with the 30 -year -old injured. “I wish him from the heart soon and complete recovery.”
Spranger also thanked the rescue and emergency services for their quick action in the care of the injured person and arresting the alleged perpetrator. “I would like to thank the Berlin police for taking all measures with a view to the location.”
