The carnival parades begin on Thursday. After the recent attacks – for example at the Christmas market in Magdeburg and a demonstration in Munich – some jokes and fools feel queasy.
The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) currently sees no danger from attack plans that are directed against carnival events. “Apart from propaganda publications and associated calls, the BKA currently has no specific indications of any attack planning against this year’s carnival celebrations,” says an updated assessment by the security authority.
The general threat from Islamist terrorism is still high in Germany. In general, “irrational perpetrators and the perpetrators and incalculable actions from these persons” could pose a danger at public events.
The Federal Criminal Police Office also considers an increase in disinformation and false news with reference to the carnival session, with the aim of unsettling the population and impairing their subjective feeling of security.
So that carnival can be celebrated safely and carefree, it is important that “current information and security precautions of the organizers and local police are observed and complied with”. Radical Islamists had called on their supporters in social networks for attacks in the Cologne Carnival.
