After the unprecedented scandal between the Ukrainian head of state Selenskyj and US President Trump, Kiev is now primarily relating to Europeans. Can you save the country attacked by Russia?
After the dispute in front of the cameras ongoing, the time arises: Europe is even more challenged in the Ukraine war and must act independently if necessary. At a special summit for the Ukraine War on Sunday, Europe has to sort up.
Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj relies primarily on the Europeans in defense against Russia’s invasion after the dumping with US President Donald Trump. At the same time, Germany is under time pressure after the Bundestag election – the Union and SPD must quickly agree on a coalition and a government capable of acting.
Dispute with the United States Heavy Beat for Ukraine
So far, the United States has been the main supporter of Ukraine in the form of arms deliveries and auxiliary funds in their defense against Russian invasion for more than three years. The country, which is struggling for its existence, can no longer rely on a continuation of the support.
Trump had sharply caught Selenskyj in the White House on Friday and asked him to strive for peace. The Ukrainian is ungrateful because he only lasted for so long in the Russian attack war. The conversations were canceled. Selenskyj left the White House prematurely without signing a planned agreement on US access to Ukrainian raw materials. Trump later wrote Trump Truth Social that Selenskyj was not ready for peace. If he was ready to do so, he could come back.
Strander wants to hit the bridge over the Atlantic
British Prime Minister Keir Strandmer wants to position himself as a transatlantic bridge builder. He invited to a Ukraine summit in London for Sunday. Selenskyj as well as European heads of state and government are expected, EU leadership and NATO boss Mark Rutte. After the public dusting between Kiev and Washington, it is becoming apparent that far more than just the fate of Ukraine should be on the agenda.
For the time being, however, the Strander seems to be able to adhere to his strategy to re -establish unity between the allies on both sides of the Atlantic. Unlike many European heads of state and government, Stranders hesitated with public solidarity for Selenskyj after the scandal in the Oval Office. Instead, he reached the listener.
Strander said with both Selenskyj and Trump, Downing Street said after the Ukrainian left the White House prematurely. “He keeps his unshakable support for Ukraine and does everything he can to find a way to a permanent peace based on sovereignty and security for Ukraine,” said a downing street spokesman.
Now it depends on the Europeans
The EU foreign commissioner Kaja Kallas found unusually clear words after the scandal. “Today it has become clear that the free world needs a new leader,” she wrote on the platform X. “It is up to us Europeans to accept this challenge.” But can Europe take this leadership role?
The new situation and new help for Ukraine will be spoken of at a special summit in Brussels on March 6th. Ideally, the 27-EU countries could say specifically how to stand together militarily.
Orban praises Trump as “brave”
However, difficulties could occur, because far -reaching decisions must be made unanimously in the EU. With Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban, however, a head of state is sitting at the table, who is closely based on Trump’s line. He has already blocked EU aids for Ukraine several times.
While most EU heads of state and heads of Selenskyj pronounced their solidarity, Orban praised the US president immediately after the scandal. “Strong men make peace, weak men wage war. Today President Donald Trump bravely campaigned for peace,” he wrote on X.
Nuclear protection from France and Great Britain?
A possible withdrawal from the USA from Europe could also lead to the question of whether the American nuclear umbrella remains. The nuclear powers of Great Britain and France come into focus. CDU boss and candidate for chancellor Friedrich Merz have already asked for talks with the two countries about a European nuclear protection. French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed this several times, but Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) rejected this. However, such a step would require considerable investments, since British and French nuclear weapons have so far only served as a supplement to the US scare within NATO.
Berlin has to sort itself quickly
Germany meets the escalation in a political floating state shortly after the Bundestag election. It should now also hit the run -up discussions by election winner Merz (CDU) about government formation with the SPD. Before the Washington Eklat, it was about whether and how at short notice fresh billions for defense can be mobilized. The conversation is a new large special fund, but above all in favor of the Bundeswehr. The discussion is likely to take a speed after the scandal in Washington.
Scholz and Merz still spoke together on Friday evening to coordinate with a view of the summit in London. On platform X, the Chancellor of Ukraine assured Germany’s continuing solidarity: “Ukraine can rely on Germany – and also on Europe.”
Germany is the second largest supporter of Ukraine to the USA. If the US aid failed to do so, Germany would have a leading role in further help. Scholz has already made it clear that Europe could hardly fill the gap.
The fact that Scholz is now only Chancellor is also noticeable in Ukraine diplomacy. While Macron and Starmer have already traveled to Washington to have talks with Trump, this is hardly possible for Scholz as a transitional chancellor. The conversations among the Europeans are also organized by Macron and Strander. The first two Ukraine summit took place in Paris, now it is London. Berlin is outside.
Billions continue to flow for the time being
In the interview of the US broadcaster Fox, Selenskyj said that without the United States it would be difficult for Ukraine to survive in the fight against the Russian attack war. The financing of the state budget is considered to be secured at least this year through long -term obligations of international partners.
In parallel to the scandal in the White House, there was also good news for Kyiv. In Warsaw, the International Monetary Fund and Ukraine agreed on the continuation of a four-year IMF program with a total of a little more than 15 billion euros. “The effective and coordinated cooperation with the IMF is a key element in the support of the financial stability of Ukraine in uncertain times,” said finance Minister Serhij Martschenko.
Kiev still expects payments of around 5.4 billion euros, with an annual financing requirement for the Ukrainian budget of almost 40 billion euros. According to the information, the IMF program is part of an international support package for the years 2023 to 2027 in the amount of the equivalent of a little more than 142 billion euros.
Even in the event of a complete failure of US transfers, which, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Finance, were previously around 10 billion euros a year, can therefore finance his expenses for a while.
Russia rejoices and increasingly contacts with the USA
The joy in Moscow about the scandal in the White House is unmistakable because Trump takes on practically Russian positions. And he represents Selenskyj as the one who prefers to fight but to engage in peace talks. The spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Sacharova, said that it was a “miracle of self -control” that Trump had a grip in the face of the “cheek” Selenskyjs and hadn’t stalled in him.
Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin said a few days ago in an interview on Russian state television that Selenskyj had become “a toxic figure”. He had the impression that Trump saw it so that Selenskyj stands in the way of a peaceful solution and ultimately also a survival of the Ukrainian state.
Russia also wants peace in Ukraine, said Putin, who, after a phone call to Trump in February, repeatedly rated the extent that started in the relationships between Moscow and Washington. Putin also offered the United States to promote the coveted raw materials such as rare earths in Russia and the Russian -occupied areas instead of in Ukraine.
