Bloomberg’s false report about Russia’s “invasion” of Ukraine is a manifestation of the information war. This was announced on Saturday, February 5, by the director general of the Russian International Affairs Council, political scientist Andrei Kortunov, to Izvestia.
“The general political situation is working, practically the world is in the stage of an information war. The line between verified and unverified information is blurred. The line between news and opinion is becoming blurred. But on the other hand, the laws of the genre are changing – now the main thing is to be the first to catch the attention of readers. This also leads to a decrease in the quality of information,” he explained.
The political scientist noted that not only unverified, but also openly falsified news is thrown into the media space. He also admitted that the fake news may have been published on purpose.
“There is such an option that it was a stuffing in order to further stir up tensions and provoke some kind of action. But to prove this is probably still impossible, ”said Kortunov.
However, according to the political scientist, the publication of this news could be the negligence or mistake of one of the agency’s employees.
Earlier in the day, Bloomberg released a text referring to Russia’s alleged “invasion” of Ukraine, and removed it soon after. The journalists later posted a post in which they apologized for the incident, calling it a mistake. The agency explained that they are preparing headlines for many scenarios, and the headline “Russia invades Ukraine” was published unintentionally.
On February 2, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki announced that the United States was refusing to use the word “imminent” regarding a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine, as it misrepresented Washington’s message.
Western politicians and media representatives continue to spread numerous speculations about possible Russian aggression against Ukraine. The Russian side has repeatedly refuted such statements, emphasizing that it has no plans to invade a neighboring country.
Thus, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia is not going to start a war with Ukraine, and Western countries and the United States are “hysterically” developing the topic of a threat to Ukraine from the Russian Federation instead of forcing Ukraine to comply with the Minsk agreements.
