Election winner Tschenscher has the choice

While the SPD in the federal government has to vacate the government issue, Peter Tschentscher can continue in Hamburg – despite losses. The day after the election is counted again. How else will it go?

After the election of the citizens’ election in Hamburg, the first mayor Peter Tschentscher from the SPD first wants to approach the Greens in order to talk about a new edition of the coalition. Tschtscher also wants to talk to the CDU afterwards. The SPD leaves the election result open both options. Tschentscher has shown a preference for a continuation of the red-green alliance, which has been ruling since 2015.

The SPD had emerged from the election to the Hamburg citizen as a clear winner. The CDU overtook the Greens and ended up in second place. The left one was double -digit for the first time, the AfD was able to grow slightly. AfD and BSW clearly failed to move into the state parliament.

Five parties in the citizens – further counts on Monday

Five parties are represented in the new citizens. The SPD came to 33.5 percent (2020: 39.2 percent) after a “simplified counting of the state election to determine the expected group strength”. The Greens also lost to 18.5 percent after their record result of 2020 (24.2 percent).

The CDU was able to free itself from its historical low (2020: 11.2 percent) and significantly expand its share of votes with 19.8 percent. The left increased to 11.2 percent (2020: 9.1 percent). The AfD improved to 7.5 percent (2020: 5.3 percent).

The FDP clearly failed with 2.3 percent (2020: 4.97), like 2020. The BSW clearly misses the move into a first West German state parliament with 1.8 percent. The Volt European Pope passed both and came to 3.3 percent.

Something excitement also on Monday

Hamburg’s right to vote is considered relatively complex. Each voter can hand over up to ten votes-five each on the state list ballot and the constituency list selection list. This system also makes the counting more difficult.

After the preliminary result from the election day, which has a simplified count of count, it is counted again today. This is particularly exciting for the politicians who have competed, since it will also be more noticeable who gets a seat in the citizens. The state election manager wants to announce the preliminary result in the evening. The election result should finally be determined after examination by the state election committee on March 19.

The Hamburg top candidates first travel to Berlin to the meetings of the bodies of the federal parties to maneuver criticism, strategy consultations and press conferences. In the evening, after state elections, bodies of the state parties come together for consultations.

Tschenscher has two options

Now Tschenscher has the choice. Tschenscher said on ZDF that red-green was a priority. The 59-year-old referred to high approval values for the alliance. But it is also “not so bad” to have a second democratic option.

The Greens assume a continuation of their alliance with the SPD. Fegebank (48) said in the ARD about the talks announced by Tschenscher that she took the mayor at the word.

The CDU, strengthened again, also has hopes. CDU top candidate Thering (40) said his party was available for a stable government. He is looking forward to exploratory talks with the SPD. It helps Hamburg if the same partners would rule as in the federal government.

Two elections in a row – but a lot of interest

As with the Bundestag election a week ago, there was also great interest in the Hamburg election: Voter turnout rose to 67.7 percent, and in 2020 it was 63.0 percent. Around 1.3 million Hamburgers aged 16 and over were entitled to vote.

Negotiation in the federal government regardless of the election dates

In the capital, exploring a coalition continues after the Bundestag election. CDU, CSU and SPD continue their discussions about the formation of a new federal government according to DPA information. In the morning, the top bodies of the CDU and SPD will take place. If the Union and Social Democrats form a coalition, they would no longer take for election appointments to be taken into account for a year. The next state elections will only take place in spring 2026.
