From the Leyen: 800 billion euro plan for upgrade

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed a plan to massively increase defense spending in Europe. In total, Europe can mobilize almost 800 billion euros, said von der Leyen in Brussels. The security of the continent is threatened in a very real way. “This is the hour of Europe and we have to do justice to her,” said von der Leyen. “We are in an era of upgrading and Europe is ready to massively increase its defense spending.”
The government of US President Donald Trump had announced just a few hours before the Leyens explanation of hiring their military aid for Ukraine for the time being – a few days after the scandal when visiting Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj in the White House. The step should have drastic consequences for Ukraine. Since the public dispute between Selenskyj and Trump, the voices have also become voices that Europe urgently had to do more for its defense itself.
New debts for more security
Among other things, the Leyen’s plan provides for a new financing mechanism with which 150 billion euros are to be made available for loans for defense investments. The funds should be used in particular for air and rocket defense, artillery systems, drones and cyber security. In addition, strategic skills such as military mobility and the protection of critical infrastructure are to be strengthened.
From the Leyen pointed out that “Russia’s aggression has suffered immense losses” and that Europe’s determined reaction had to ensure long -term stability. “This is about better and common expenses,” she said. Member States could bundle their demand, shop together and at the same time strengthen support for Ukraine.
In addition, the alternative clause of the stability and growth pact is to be activated. It should allow individual Member States to make new debts for defense expenditure without having to fear an EU deficit procedure. If the Member States were increased by an average of 1.5 percent of gross domestic product, this could create a household freedom of almost 650 billion euros over a period of four years, von der Leyen.
From the Leyen hopes that their proposal, together with private capital and additional funds for the European investment bank, could mobilize almost 800 billion euros for defense. She presented her plan shortly before a special summit to Ukraine on Thursday. There, the EU heads and government heads want to advise, among other things, how to continue the European armaments industry.
