Debt brake: Majority of the citizens agrees with the plans

Debt brake
Survey: Citizens are behind the plans of the Union and SPD

Union and SPD want to loosen the debt brake and invest high sums. Many citizens think that’s right – and already have ideas where the money would be well invested.

One of the big topics in the election campaign was the debt brake. Already in the exploratory talks, the CDU, CSU and the SPD have agreed to loosen them in order to spend more money on defense. Defense expenditure beyond one percent of gross domestic product should be excluded.

In addition, the special fund for infrastructure of 500 billion euros, which is also financed through debts. Such gigantic sums ensure abdominal pain in some, after all, debts will also have to be repaid in the future. The clear majority of Germans are behind the plans of the Union and SPD.

Clear majority finds the loosening of the debt brake correctly

This shows at least a current survey by the Forsa market and opinion research institute. More than three quarters (76 percent) of the respondents will find the project to invest in the infrastructure of investing 500 billion euros through new loans in the next few years. Only 19 percent do not consider it correct. When asked where the money should be invested, schools and bridges are most frequently mentioned. Apparently there is also a need for housing and the rail network.

The consent to the increased defense spending and the associated loosening of the debt brake is not quite as clear. Nevertheless, 71 percent are called these measures well. Almost a quarter of the citizens do not consider them correct. The supporters of the Union, SPD and the Greens are overwhelming for this. The supporters of the left are split, a majority (63 percent) reject the plans for the AfD supporters.

Disagreement on coordination in the Bundestag

However, there is still a hurdle for the Union and the SPD: In order to be able to implement the ambitious projects, the Basic Law must be changed. This should still happen in the old Bundestag-because in the newly elected parliament, the middle parties no longer have two-thirds majority, AfD and the left have a so-called blocking minority with which they can block changes in the Basic Law.

The hurry is controversial. In the survey, just more than half (56 percent) of the citizens find it correct to have the old Bundestag voted. 37 percent see the decision -making authority in the new Bundestag.

The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute Forsa for the Stern and RTL Germany on March 5. Database: 1019 respondents. Statistical fault tolerance: +/- 3 percentage points. This means that the survey is representative.
