The Iranian protest singer Mehdi Jarrahi is again a free man. The authorities had dropped the indictment against him, reported, among other things, the news portal Enkhab. However, this only after a penalty of 74 lashes had been carried out. His lawyer Zahra Minuei confirmed the media reports. Jarrahi had released a song in which he asked the women in Iran to take off the mandatory headscarf.

During the women’s protests from 2022 against the theocratic system – and especially against the Islamic dress code – Jarrahi composed the protest song “Roosarito” (your headscarf) with the chorus: “Take off your headscarf and leave your hair free … Then Jarrahi was arrested for disregarding Islamic values and sentenced to a prison sentence and 74 lashes.
In 2022, the death of young Kurdin Jina Mahsa Amini triggered the most violent protests against the Islamic system in Iran. Amini was arrested by the moral police and died in their custody. Although the government contested any complicity in the death of the 22-year-old, the tragic incident led to nationwide protests. Since then, many women in the country have also been ignored.
