The EU no longer wants to rely on the protection of the USA and starts an upgrade initiative at its crisis summit. On another topic, a friend Donald Trump is causing trouble again.
In response to the United States Course Course Course under President Donald Trump, the EU wants to massively upgrade. In the Ukraine policy, however, she does not find a common line for a single Trump friend among the 27 heads of state and government: the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban did not want to join a joint declaration for the continued support of the country, which was contested by Russia.
The other 26 member states then confirmed without him that they continue to support the “independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine” within their internationally recognized borders – including weapon deliveries. In addition, for the end of the war, they demanded, among other things, credible security guarantees and that peace negotiations do not take place without Ukrainian or European representatives.
Up to 150 billion euros for loans
The summit declaration of massive investments in the armed forces is more far more. The EU wants to do justice to the growing doubts as to whether Europe can still count on the protection of the USA. All 27 Member States basically faced the initiative of the EU Commission, according to which up to 150 billion euros in EU credits for defense investments are made available and exceptions in the EU debt rules for defense are to be made possible.
The basis of the consultations was a plan presented by the EU Commission at the beginning of the week with the name “Rearm Europe” (such as upgrading Europe). The aim is to mobilize a total of almost 800 billion euros. Among other things, the European Investment Bank (EIB) should change its rules for lending in such a way that more investments in armaments projects can be funded.
From the Leyen summit summit as historical
“History is written today,” said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about the results. One is determined to invest more, better and faster together. Until the next summit in two weeks in two weeks, the Commission’s proposals are to explain in detail how the decisions can be legally implemented.
Selenskyj gets backing with Europeans
The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj also traveled to the summit, who thanked the EU for the help previously achieved. “They have sent a strong signal to the Ukrainian people, to the Ukrainian warriors, to the civilian population, to all of our families,” he said. “We are very grateful that we are not alone. These are not just words. We feel it.” The Ukrainian President, who was most recently humiliated during his visit to Trump’s White House and his Vice JD Vance, was welcomed with open arms in Brussels.
Macron wants European nuclear umbrella
The French President Emmanuel Macron, with his renewed advance, caused a European nuclear protective shield based on French nuclear weapons. He had proposed to open a strategic conversation with the Member States that are interested in making ahead on this question, he said after the summit. “Some of my colleagues came to me.” You will now start an exchange at the technical level, then there should be discussions at the level of heads of state and government. In a few months, it will be shown whether new cooperation could arise.
Scholz wants to stay with NATO system
However, the outgoing Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) wants to stick to the previous NATO scaring system based on the US atom weapons. “Nobody plans to go from today’s situation that we have an agreement in NATO. And that is also the common position of all relevant parties in Germany,” he said. “I think this is also something realistic when you take a look at the size of the options for action.”
The United States has a much larger nuclear weapon arsenal compared to the European nuclear powers of Great Britain and France. According to expert estimates, they have still stationed around 100 atomic bombs in Europe – some of them on the Büchel pilot’s base in the Eifel. US atomic bombs are also said to be stored in Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Turkey. There is no official information.
