Juso chairman sharply criticizes Gerhard Schröder

Juso Chairwoman Jessica Rosenthal has also targeted Gerhard Schröder because of his attitude towards the Ukraine conflict. She called the former chancellor a “Russian representative”.

Former chancellor Gerhard Schröder remains a thorn in the side of the SPD with his stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. After many of Schröder’s top comrades had publicly distanced themselves from his statements on the subject and his leading position at Nord Stream AG, the chairman of the Jusos has now followed suit: “Gerhard Schröder does not speak as an SPD functionary. He no longer bears any responsibility in the Party – and that’s a good thing,” said Jessica Rosenthal of the Berlin “Tageszeitung” (Monday edition).

Schröder spoke “as a representative of Russia’s interests – and as nothing else,” Rosenthal said. “You have to name it clearly.”

Schröder has been nominated for the Gazprom board of directors

The Russian state-owned company Gazprom announced on Friday that Schröder had been nominated as a candidate for the supervisory board. The former chancellor is already chairman of the shareholders’ committee of Nord Stream AG, which is majority-owned by Gazprom, and head of the supervisory board at the Russian state-owned energy company Rosneft. He recently caused a stir by claiming that Ukraine was “saber-rattling” in its conflict with Russia.

With a view to the conflict, Rosenthal advocated putting the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline on hold now. “If Russia continues to act as it is doing, Nord Stream 2 cannot go into operation,” said the member of the Bundestag. “Regardless of the approval process, the federal government should make it clear that it is not willing to push this project any further in the current situation.” This should apply as long as Russia acts as an aggressor against Ukraine.
