Thousands of air travelers have to be brave: Because of a warning strike by the Verdi union, there are many flights out this Monday. Occasionally, however, alternatives seem to be found.
The Verdi union has paralyzed large parts of air traffic at 13 German airports. Employees from the public service of the airport operators, soil traffic services and the air security areas in various tariff conflicts have been on the ground since 0.00 a.m., as a spokesman for the union confirmed. The warning strike should take 24 hours. At individual airports, the actions only started in the early morning at the start of operation.
The background is two different tariff conflicts: In the collective bargaining negotiations for the public service of the federal government and the municipalities, the union calls for eight percent more wages, but at least 350 euros more, as well as three additional free days. So far, employers have not submitted a specific offer.
In air safety, Verdi calls for improvement in occupational health and health protection, 30 days of vacation and additional vacation for shift work.
The warning strikes affect Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Cologne/Bonn, Leipzig/Halle and Stuttgart. At the airports Weeze near Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, only employees in the air security area are called up for the strand.
According to an updated estimate by the ADV airport association, air traffic will come to a standstill in large parts of Germany: According to this, due to the various outputs at 13 locations, more than 3,500 flights are likely to fail, and around 560,000 passengers could not start as planned.
No air traffic at the capital airport
At the capital airport BER, air traffic should be completely, starts and landings are expected to exist there. A passenger aircraft will not leave Frankfurt Airport on Monday, a spokesman for the traffic management said in the morning. Of 1,116 starts and landings with around 150,000 passengers in Frankfurt, 1,054 were canceled in Frankfurt. According to the spokesman, there should only be a few arrivals.
Warning strikes even larger than planned
The warning strikes in the public service should also agree with employees of the air security areas. These work in passenger control, personnel, goods and freight control as well as in service areas.
For them, a new collective agreement is currently being negotiated with the Federal Association of Air Security Companies (BDLS). The next round of negotiations is scheduled for March 26 and 27. The next round of negotiations for this Friday (March 14) in Potsdam is planned for the public service.
Abuse of strike right?
The air traffic industry accuses Verdi abuse of strike rights. So-called warning strikes would be used as camouflage for far-reaching outstanding and nodes of the economy are paralyzed, says the Eurowings boss and president of the BDL industry association, Jens Bischof.
He demands a “strike law” with a binding arbitration from outridges in the critical infrastructure. The current “Stand of Standstill” gives the last impetus for it. The employers organized in the BDLS criticized the warning strikes, negotiator Christian Huber described them as “not expedient”.
