After Justin Trudeau’s resignation, the liberal party in Canada chose a new chairman. Great challenges are waiting for him.
After Justin Trudeau’s resignation, former central bank manager Mark Carney Canada, as head of government, is to lead through economically turbulent weeks and in expected new elections. The 59 -year -old economist clearly prevailed in the election as chairman of the liberal party with 85.9 percent of the votes of the members.
With the leadership of the party, the former head of the British and Canadian central banks, at least temporarily, also takes over the office of Prime Minister of Trudeau. In a few weeks there will be new elections in the second largest area in the world, which is under great pressure because of the aggressive customs policy and annexation threats of US President Donald Trump.
“We have made this the best country in the world and now our neighbors want to take over. Never!” Carney said shortly before the results were announced. Other candidates had also clearly positioned themselves against the United States in their final speeches. Justin Trudeau said: “We are a diplomatic country if we can, but if we have to, we fight – elbows up!”
Carney is a political newcomer and went into the race for the party chair with an economic -oriented, centric agenda. In the trade war with the United States, he wants to continue the Trudeau course of the determined resistance. After the election, he said: “The Americans want our resources, our water, our country.” He pointed out that Trump attacked “Canadian workers, families and companies”. “We cannot allow him to be successful,” he emphasized.
This is how Carny follows Justin Trudeau as Canada’s head of government
Prime Minister Trudeau with Carney now has to set a date for the handover of the government transactions and formally withdraw. This should happen in the coming days. The new premier may want to adapt the cabinet, with existing ministers in the face of the soon expected new election. The parliament in Ottawa meets again on March 24th. For this day, the opposition plans a vote of no confidence, which should trigger new elections in the coming months.
Carney could also declare his minority government to fail before this date and call for new elections.
