Greenland to Trump: “Enough is enough”

Trump is again on the side of NATO General Secretary Rutte. The Greenland head and his expected successor counterattacks with clear rejections.

With new statements about the Annexion of Greenland, US President Donald Trump has increased further trouble on the largest island on earth. “Now the American president has brought the idea into play again. I can’t accept that under any circumstances,” wrote the acting head of government Múte B. Eggede on Facebook. One should not get through the Greenlanders disrespectful. “Enough is enough”.

In a joint message in the evening, the five parties of the Greenland Parliament said after a meeting that Trump’s statements were “unacceptable” towards friends and allies in a defense alliance.

Egedes possible successors as head of government, the liberal Jens-Frederik Nielsen, also rejected the statements of the US President. “Trump’s statement in the USA is inappropriate and only shows once again that we have to stand together in such situations,” wrote Nielsen on Facebook. In the election program of his party democracy it said: “Greenland is not for sale. Not today. Not tomorrow. Never.”

Trump to possible annexation: “I think it will happen”

Trump has been talking again and again for months of wanting to take control of Greenland, which belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark. At a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the White House, he said on Thursday when asked by a reporter about his plans for a possible annexation: “Well, I think it will happen.” Trump emphasized the great strategic importance of the island and that Denmark was very far away.

Eggede has repeatedly emphasized that his compatriots did not want to be Danes or Americans, but Greenlanders. A survey has also shown that a clear majority of island citizens do not want to become part of the United States. Also practically no one in Greenland politics is for the fact that the island becomes a US territory.

In the parliamentary election in Greenland, Egedes party Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) and her social democratic coalition partner Siumut suffered strong losses on Tuesday. Nielsen’s social -liberal party democracy (Democrats) had become the new strongest strength after a tripling of her voice share. The task of forming a new government in times of the Trump Controvers will now have a new government on Nielsen.
