The Bundeswehr is increasing its presence in Lithuania. According to Defense Minister Lambrecht, Germany is sending 350 more soldiers to the former Soviet republic. “You can rely on us,” said the minister.
In the tensions with Russia, the Federal Republic sends 350 more German soldiers to the NATO contingent in Lithuania. This was announced by Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht on Monday in Munster in Lower Saxony. “In this way we are strengthening our contribution to the eastern flank. You can rely on us,” the SPD politician told journalists.
Lambrecht: Soldiers “can be marched within a few days”
The additional soldiers could “be deployed within a few days,” said the minister. She informed the Bundestag about the decision “a few minutes ago”.
Germany has been leading a multinational NATO unit in the Baltic country of Lithuania for five years and provides around half of the 1,200 forces. 250 of the additional soldiers should come from the army, another 100 from other units of the Bundeswehr, said Lambrecht.
Around 500 Bundeswehr soldiers are currently stationed in Lithuania, which borders on the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus and has been part of NATO since 2004, as part of the western military alliance’s so-called front presence. Germany also regularly takes part in NATO airspace surveillance in the Baltic States and in Romania.
