Dürr wants to become a FDP party leader

The FDP needs a new leader. The previous parliamentary group leader throws his hat into the ring. Defeats are no reason to give up, he says.

After the debacle in the Bundestag election, the previous FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr wants to take the lead in the party. According to information from the German Press Agency, he applies from FDP circles for the party chair and thus the successor to Christian Lindner.

“Some say it is not the time for liberal politics. We need economic and social freedom more than ever,” Dürr explained to X. The FDP is already missing in the Bundestag, he said in a video message. He wanted to help the party return.

The Bundestag election was a “bitter defeat”, said Dürr. But defeats are not to give up a reason. It is not over with the FDP. “A party in Germany is needed. A party that believes in the power of the individual and does not think that the state should regulate everything. A party that brings together economic freedom and social freedom,” said Dürr.

At 4.3 percent, the FDP had cut down disastrously in the Bundestag election and missed moving into the Bundestag. The previous party leader Lindner reacted immediately and announced his withdrawal from politics.

First, the FDP European politician Marie-Egnes Strack-Zimmermann and party veteran Wolfgang Kubicki were traded for the chair. They explained their willingness to rebuild the party. However, Strack-Zimmermann emphasized that she did not want to become party leader. “I am convinced that the reconstruction of the FDP can only succeed in the team. The leadership should be taken over by a young and fresh personality,” she said.
