French EU MP demands statue of freedom from the United States

In the 19th century, France gave the United States the Statue of Liberty for the Hundred Year. Now an EU member is calling for the monument back-because of Donald Trump.
French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann blames the United States. The United States had “decided to switch to the tyrants side,” said Glucksmann on Sunday in front of around 1,500 delegates at the party congress of his center-left party Place Publique (PP). “We gave you them, but apparently you despise them.” Therefore, he asked the United States to return the statue of Liberty to his home country.

Glucksmann, top candidate for the socialists at the past European elections, is a strong supporter of Ukraine and had sharply criticized the rapprochement of the United States under President Donald Trump to Russia. In his speech, Glucksmann also denounced the dismissal of researchers by the Trump government, who had insisted on their scientific independence.
At the end of the 19th century, the statue of Freedom was a gift from France to the United States for the hundredth anniversary of the declaration of independence dated July 4, 1776. The 46 -meter -high copper statue is enthroned with its seven -jet crown and the gilded torch in hand over the New York harbor. For millions of immigrants who once waited for a better life on the neighboring island of Ellis Island for the entry permit to the United States.
