In the nineties, two men are said to have planned an attack on prison. When this failed, they dipped. Almost exactly 30 years later, they face a process in Berlin.
Almost exactly 30 years after a failed explosive attack on prison construction in Berlin, the trial against two alleged members of the left -wing extremist group “Das Committee” begins. For the procedure on Monday (9.30 a.m.) in front of the Berlin Chamber Court, the accused Peter K. (65) and Thomas W. (62) returned to Germany from their exile in Venezuela.
In December 2024, the Federal Prosecutor’s office charged charges against the alleged left -wing extremists. They are “sufficiently suspicious to have agreed to bring about an explosive explosion,” it said at the time by the Supreme German Administration.
Around 120 kilograms of explosives in propane gas bottles
The accused had joined together in autumn 1994 with a third, now died accomplice to the left -wing extremist association, according to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office. Their goal was to bring about socio-political changes from fire and explosive attacks on government institutions.
According to the indictment, Peter K. and Thomas W. and the accomplice in April 1995 planned an attack on the deportation prison under construction in Berlin-Grünau. To do this, they are said to have filled more than 120 kilograms of explosives into propane gas bottles and prepared them with time clients.
The stop itself did not occur: the explosive devices should be reloaded in a parking lot near the detention center – but a randomly passing police patrol came in between. The men fled.
Get asylum in South America
The men dived – and were on the run for years. Almost 20 years after the trio had dipped, the Federal Criminal Police Office felt the now dead suspects in Venezuela. The police arrested him, he was detained in South America.
In Germany’s request for delivery, however, was rejected. The two defendants received asylum in Brazil.
Arrested when returning to the airport
In the meantime, however, the duo is back in Germany. According to lawyer Lukas Theune, a so -called understanding was preceded. Accordingly, the defendants can expect a suspended sentence if a confession. Such agreements in the criminal trial are permitted in suitable cases. Above all, they should reduce the workload of the judiciary, but also offer advantages.
Peter K. and Thomas W. were arrested on arrival at the capital airport BER on the basis of the existing arrest warrant. You are in custody in the Moabit prison. However, the defense announced that they would apply for dismissal from custody at the start of the trial.
Allegation far from statute
From the defense’s point of view, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office goes back to the fact that there is still a process after almost 30 years. It does not accuse the duo membership in a terrorist association or the planned attack in Grünau, but an appointment for action. This does not become time -barred after 20 years. Complaints, on the other hand, remained without success at the Federal Court of Justice and the Federal Constitutional Court, said lawyer Lukas Theune.
So far, the presiding judge Gregor Herb has set four days for the process before the 2nd criminal senate of the Chamber Court. A judgment is therefore expected on April 8.
