Trump’s phone call with Putin makes Ukrainians worry

When the President of Russia and the United States talk about the Ukraine War, this basically affects the whole world. In Kyiv and the EU, bad things are feared. The Chancellor therefore receives a high visit.

Before his phone call with Russia’s head of state Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump points out that some building blocks of a peace solution in the Ukraine War have already been worked out. “Many elements of a final agreement have been agreed, but there is still a lot to do,” Trump announced about his online language tube Truth Social. “I’m really looking forward to talking to President Putin.” The Ukrainian government called for the Kremlin chief to put pressure on the Kremlin chief because he deliberately pulls the war on the war on three years.

According to the US President, the planned phone call between Trump and Putin should take place on Tuesday morning (local time Washington; in the afternoon/evening of German times) and, according to official information, would be the second information since the Republican took office in January. The first conversation took place in February, and Trump also promised a personal meeting with Putin at the time, for which there is still no appointment. For this purpose, Trump’s special sent Steve Witkoff met the Russian President in Moscow last week.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News Radio that you were closer to peace than “two weeks ago or six months ago”. At the same time, he emphasized: “I don’t think anyone has moved to our satisfaction so far.” With a view to a meeting of American and Ukrainian government representatives in Saudi Arabia last week, Rubio said that Kiev had been given good concessions. According to Trump, the discussion revolves around area claims, power plants and the – as he formulated – “division of certain goods”.

“Must also get something from the Russians”

During the talks in Dschidda, Rubio and Trump’s security advisor Mike Waltz had convinced the Ukrainian leadership of a 30-day ceasefire. However, the US government had also put the Ukrainians under massive pressure by stopping weapon deliveries and the transfer of secret service information to Kiev. The combat break accepted by the Ukrainian side should apply if Moscow also adheres to it. “And now we have to get something from the Russians,” emphasized Rubio.

Putin recently praised Trump’s efforts for a solution, but does not see his conditions for consent to a 30-day ceasefire. Among other things, he demands a guarantee that Ukraine will never become a member of NATO – which from the government’s point of view, but the most important security guarantee for the country would be.

Macron speaks to Selenskyj – and comes to Berlin

The war and struggle for further military aid for Europeans for Kiev will also significantly shape the EU summit on Thursday and Friday in Brussels. France’s President Emmanuel Macron, one of the most important supporters of Ukraine, exchanged ahead with President Wolodymyr Selenskyj. “We coordinated our positions before the talk of Trump and Putin and before the meetings in Europe,” said Selenskyj after the phone call.

He also declared himself a ceasefire. “But in order to overcome the realization, Russia has to stop putting conditions,” emphasized Selenskyj. Macron wrote on the X platform: “Now it can be proven to Russia that it really wants to peace.” The allies together would have to develop a specific peace plan that contains strong security guarantees for Ukraine and preventing Russia from attacking.

Selenskyj announced meetings with partners in Europe, some of whom have agreed to send peace troops to Ukraine. These meetings should serve “practically some details of the future security architecture in Europe and the contingents of the partners who are willing to help peace in Ukraine,” said Selenskyj. “Pressure is required so that in Moscow it is finally accepted that their war has to be ended.”

Does a “coalition of the willing” come about?

France and Great Britain want to secure a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine with their own troops in a “coalition of the willing”. So far, Russia strictly rejects the presence of soldiers from NATO countries in the attacked neighboring country.

Macron will also meet in Berlin today on consultations with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). A conversation with Scholz’s probably successor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is also planned according to DPA information. With a view to the EU summit, the question will also be about how to increase defense ability in Europe together.

The Ukrainian government and its European allies fear that Trump wants to force a peace regulation, which Russia could actually result in the lost war, which destroyed large parts of Ukraine and cost countless people. Germany has been the second most important arms supplier in Ukraine in the three years of the war to the United States since February 2022. The Federal Government has promised its permanent solidarity in order to achieve a fair peace.
