In addition to billions of investments, SPD boss Lars Klingbeil considers a fundamental modernization of the country necessary. Money alone could not solve the challenges in front of which the country is facing, Klingbeil said in the special meeting of the Bundestag. “We have to become more efficient, more targeted and professional everywhere.” Reforms are urgently needed that the SPD wants to approach in a future federal government together with the Union. Bureaucracy has to be dismantled, this requires a “change of mentality,” said Klingbeil.
At the same time, the SPD parliamentary group leader emphasized that this does not mean the dismantling of employee rights. “Made in Germany” stands for excellence, but also for participation and strong employees. Germany has to uphold these values in times of autocrats all over the world. The planned change of Basic Law is an “important opportunity” to make Germany strong again. “The world is being measured again. Nobody is waiting for Germany – and nobody is waiting for Europe,” said Klingbeil. “It is now our damn task that we defend this Europe.”
