Pride parade banned in Hungary

People with non -heterosexual orientation are no longer allowed to celebrate their identity in public meetings. This was decided by the parliament at the instigation of the right -wing populist government.

Hungary has banned the previously annual pride parades, in which people demonstrate for the rights of non-heterosexual life plans. The parliament in Budapest approved the corresponding legislative proposal of the government camp led by right-wing populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the urgent procedure with 137 yes and 27 no votes. The parliament has 199 MPs.

Opponents of the new regulation from the small opposition party Momentum lit smoke bombs in the plenary hall during the coordination. The session was therefore interrupted to ventilate the hall. Afterwards, more than a thousand people in Budapest demonstrated against the decision after a call from momentum. A Danube bridge therefore had to be temporarily closed for traffic.

Orban had already indicated the ban in February in a speech to the nation: “The organizers of the Pride should not try to prepare this year’s move. It would be wasted time and money.”

Search for Pride participants with facial recognition

Violations of the ban are considered an administrative offense that are punished with fines. In general, fines of up to 200,000 forints (around 500 euros) are possible in Hungary. This can affect both the organizers and the participants of Pride parades, which are to be identified with the help of facial recognition software.

Child protection is considered a reason

Formally, the new regulation is a supplement to the Assembly Act, which provides that meetings are not allowed to violate the Child Protection Act. The Pride parade is not explicitly mentioned, but it is meant, as was the result of the debates in parliament.

Since 2021, a regulation known as the Child Protection Act has banned access to information about non -heterosexual forms of life. Corresponding books, films and other media must therefore not be accessible to minors.

Orban’s government is also planning a constitutional change according to which a person is defined exclusively as a man or woman. Accordingly, non-binary people should not be recognized as such. Since December 2020, Hungary has also stated that a mother can only be a woman and a father.
