The much expected telephone conversation between the White House and the Kremlin did not bring the immediate ceasefire for 30 days. There was only an agreement that you have to see whether it was wearing.
For the second time since his return to the White House, US President Donald Trump has phoned Russian President Vladimir Putin. The expectations of the conversation were huge. The results remain behind it. Five findings:
1) Only a minimum goal was reached
The telephone call did not provide the immediate ceasefire hoped for by Trump for 30 days, but a small first step: Russia will not be shot by Ukrainian energy systems for 30 days, even if Ukraine does not use it. The Kremlin said that Putin immediately instructed his military. This should also apply immediately according to Trump’s information. A reaction was missing from Kyiv for the time being.
The step remains behind the suggestion to interrupt all attacks to the air and to sea. Nevertheless, he could bring relief for both sides. The all -night Russian air strikes have damaged large parts of the energy supply in Ukraine. For Russia, the Ukrainian drone hits on its oil refineries recently pose a danger.
Putin brought his well -known arguments against a general ceasefire. It is unclear how such a break of fire along the entire front line should be monitored and secured, he said during the phone call. The Kremlin also provided two conditions. Accordingly, the West may no longer deliver any further weapons and intelligence information to Kyiv. Ukraine must not use the time to recruit other soldiers and to re -armament. Such restrictions do not apply to Russia.
Even for an agreement on a final peace, the Kremlin does not move away from its demands. In addition to your own security interests – i.e. the ban on NATO accession for Ukraine – also includes the “elimination of the causes of the conflict”. Moscow accuses Kiev of suppressing the Russian -speaking minority in Ukraine and promoting nationalism. The demand for a further influence on politics in Kiev is implicitly connected.
3) Not the Ukraine stands in the way of peace
The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj has had to be accused of ungrateful and lack of peace will in the past few weeks. At times, the United States no longer sent intelligence information and weapons. Then the Ukraine joined the US proposal of a 30-day ceasefire. She was able to show that she was not blocking the way to agreements. Now the ceasefire does not come to which Moscow would have linked many conditions. Ukraine fears that its territorial concessions could be demanded. But this question did not occur in the communications from Moscow and Washington.
4) Trump progresses slower when he wants
The US President started the negotiations with maximum demands-but his full-bodied promise to end the Russian war of aggression within 24 hours has obviously not fulfilled. In the meantime, the Republican himself is moving away from this statement: it was “a bit sarcastic”, he recently said. Now it is about ending the war quickly. So while he continues to accommodate Ukraine, he stages himself as a pent of peace.
But his conversation with Putin did not bring the hoped -for breakthrough – although the US President recently talked to the Kremlin chief for his mouth. The agreement on a partial ceasefire is a first step that Trump presents to his followers as a success: At Truth Social, he said after the conversation that “many elements of a peace treaty were discussed” and the process “in full”. However, the question is whether he can achieve this goal soon. Because so far he has apparently not been able to prevail against Putin.
5) Europeans have to fight for space at the negotiating table
The bosses of the great nuclear matters were on the phone alone, neither Ukraine nor the European countries were in demand. The European countries are strengthening their efforts to invest more in Ukrainian defense and their own security of these weeks. Reflections on a European military mission in Ukraine are taking shape. It is intended to train the Ukrainian army and serve as protection against further Russian attacks. But it is unclear when the soldiers could set off whether they come with or without the consent of Russia. Time is forced before Trump and Putin do further possible solo purposes.
