The Union is making a U-turn in the facility-related vaccination requirement: CDU leader Friedrich Merz is calling on the federal government to suspend the introduction of compulsory vaccination for nursing staff, which is planned for mid-March.
The CDU is demanding that the federal government suspend compulsory vaccination for staff in medical and nursing facilities throughout Germany. That was the “very unanimous opinion of the Presidium and Federal Executive Committee of the CDU,” said party leader Friedrich Merz on Monday at the CDU/CSU parliamentary group chairmen’s conference in Saarbrücken. After consultations, it became apparent: “The government leaves the facilities and the employees completely alone with the consequences of this compulsory vaccination,” said Merz.
Friedrich Merz supports Söder: “We agree”
The Union faction approved the proposal in December “assuming that the problems can be solved,” said Merz. “We have to rethink how we deal with the subject of compulsory vaccination,” he said.
In any case, things cannot remain as the federal government has now decided – mainly because the consequences for employees and the consequences for the companies under labor law and social law have not been considered.
Merz referred to NRW Minister of Health Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU), who reported in the party committees of “insurmountable difficulties in the facilities” in implementing compulsory vaccination. “We see a massive loss of staff there,” said Merz.
The so-called institution-related corona vaccination obligation was decided by the Bundestag and Bundesrat in December: Employees in institutions with vulnerable people such as clinics and nursing homes must prove by March 15, 2022 that they have been fully vaccinated against corona or have recovered from corona. A medical certificate stating that you cannot be vaccinated is also possible.
Bavaria announced on Monday that it would not initially implement the statutory vaccination requirement for staff in clinics and nursing homes. Merz and the Union faction leaders of the federal states expressly supported the plan of Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU). “We are of the same opinion,” said Merz.
