War in Ukraine
US envoy: from Sunday Ukraine negotiations in Dschidda

US President Trump and Kremlin chief Putin have negotiated an end to attacks on energy systems in the Ukraine War. Now there should be further negotiations quickly.

Negotiations on the end of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine are to continue in the Saudi port city of Dschidda, according to the US envoy Steve Witkoff. There are still a few details to work out, said Witkoff in an interview by the US broadcaster Fox News. The confidante of US President Donald Trump did not give details of the planned meeting.

Trump had agreed on Tuesday with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin on a phone call that Russia would not shoot energy plants in the neighboring country for 30 days, even if Ukraine does without such attacks. The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj said that his country supported the idea, but still needed information on what Trump and Putin would have agreed. “I am certainly hopeful that the Ukrainians will agree,” said Witkoff now.

Already negotiations with Ukraine

Most recently, representatives of the United States and Ukraine had already advised in Dschidda about the end of the Russian war of aggression. Witkoff now spoke to Putin of “some breakthroughs” after the phone call. He said: “I want to praise President Putin for everything he did with his call to bring his country closer to a final peace agreement.” Putin had ordered the war of attack, which destroyed large parts of Ukraine and cost countless people, himself in February 2022. With Witkoff, he recently had personal conversations in Moscow.

Start with the energy infrastructure

After Trump’s phone call with Putin, the White House announced that both had agreed that “the way to peace” had to start with the energy infrastructure. In addition, negotiations on the end of the fighting in the Black Sea are planned. The Kremlin also spoke of negotiations. Witkoff now said that he assumed that Moscow had agreed to the “maritime aspect of a ceasefire” with a view to the Black Sea. It remained open how exactly his statement was to be understood.
