“Explan model”: Heusgen criticizes Baerbock’s nomination for UN-top jobs

Christoph Heusgen, the former head of the Munich security conference, criticizes the decision to nominate Annalena Baerbock instead of Helga Schmid for the chair of the UN General Assembly.

The former chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, criticized the nomination of Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) as President of the UN General Assembly.

It is “an insolence to replace the best and most internationally experienced German diplomat with a discontinued model,” Heusgen told the “Tagesspiegel” (Thursday edition) with a view to the revocation of the nomination of the top diplomat Helga Schmid in favor of Baerbock. It is an “evening red” action.

New top job: Has Baerbock displaced a career diplomat?

Helga Schmid originally proposed

In September, the federal government actually proposed the Diplomatin Helga Schmid as the German candidate for the chair of the UN General Assembly. The former general secretary of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) is also the deputy of the President of the Board of Trustees of the Munich Security Conference.

On Tuesday, governmental circles said that the Federal Government now wanted to name Baerbock as a German candidate for the chair of the UN General Assembly 2025/26. A corresponding cabinet decision was initiated in the circulation process.

The office of President of the UN General Assembly is entitled to the Western European group of states due to the internal UN agreements for the 2025/26 session. In this, Germany had received the law of occupation some time ago.

Sigmar Gabriel also expresses criticism: “Baerbock can learn a lot from her”

The chair of the General Assembly in New York, in which all 193 UN member states are represented, will be elected in early June. The next term will run for one year from September. If Baerbock is elected to the office, the 44-year-old wants to put her Bundestag mandate down when taking office.

Heusgen referred to the numerous merits of Helga Schmid in his criticism of Baerbock’s nomination for the top post. The experienced diplomat was an office manager of ex-Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer (Greens) and general secretary of the European Foreign Service. In addition, she negotiated the nuclear deal with Iran, Heusgen emphasized.

As Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Schmid also “protected them from falling apart”. With a view to Baerbock’s own political maxim, the former top diplomat asked: “Is the feminist foreign policy?”

Former Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) also showed criticism of the personnel personnel. Gabriel told the “Tagesspiegel” that Helga Schmid was “a great diplomat”. “Ms. Baerbock can learn a lot from her.”
