She is still Annalena Baerbock Foreign Minister, but she already has the next job: at the UN. Now there is criticism because a top diplomat has to give way.
The outgoing Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) has defended the Federal Government’s decision to nominate her for the chair of the UN General Assembly instead of top diplomatin Helga Schmid. This posting is “analogous to many predecessors who were also former foreign minister or former prime minister,” she said at a press conference during her visit to the Lebanese capital.
She pointed out the importance of the United Nations, “especially in these stormy times”. “The General Assembly has an important role in the light of the UN Security Council, which is repeatedly blocked.” That is why one wants to follow “the analogy of many, many predecessors” at this point.
Annalena Baerbock instead of top diplomat Helga Schmid
The top German top diplomat Helga Schmid was originally intended for the office. Now the position is to be politically occupied and Baerbock is to be named as a German candidate for the 2025/26 session period. Baerbock is to be elected in June and will take up their one -year term in September. According to internal agreements, your choice is a matter of form at the United Nations.
The former chairman of the Munich security conference and former UN ambassador, Christoph Heusgen, had sharply criticized the decision. “It is outrageous to replace the best and most internationally experienced German diplomat with a discontinued model,” Heusgen told the Tagesspiegel. The “Rheinische Post” he said that the nomination gave a bad light on German foreign policy.
