US President Donald Trump wants to comply with an election promise and dissolve the Ministry of Education-the states already finance it for the most part.
According to US media reports, US President Donald Trump will launch an order to dissolve the Ministry of Education on Thursday. As several media reported on Wednesday, the decree during a ceremony in the White House is to be signed. According to the “Politico” news portal, several Republican governors take part in the signing on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the ministry led by the Trump confidante Linda McMahon continues to implement the personnel cuts and medium-sized cancellations promoted by the President and his advisor Elon Musk. Trump and Musk want to drastically trast budgets and staff of the US federal authorities. A week ago, the Ministry of Education had already announced the dismissal of almost half of its employees.
In the election campaign, Trump announced that he would abolish the Ministry of Education in the event of his election. The Republicans’ plans provide to decentralize the education and to transfer the powers of the ministry to the individual states.
Donald Trump and the Ministry of Education
Traditionally, the US government only has a limited influence on education. Only about 13 percent of the funds for primary and secondary schools come from federal funds, the rest is financed by the states and local communities. However, the federal funds are existentially important for schools with a low budget and for pupils with special needs.
