The authority has long been a thorn in the side of the US President. Now he has taken a crucial step.
US President Donald Trump has signed a decree to destroy the Ministry of Education. It was the beginning of his endeavor to eliminate the department “once and for all”, said the Republican during a ceremony in the White House.
In the decree, Education Minister Linda McMahon instructs to take all the necessary steps to reduce the functions of the ministry to a minimum. In order to completely abolish the department, the consent of the congress would be necessary.
The Ministry should only have minimal functions such as the allocation of scholarships and certain financial aid, the spokeswoman for the White House, Karoline Leavitt, had previously explained. Trump now said that corresponding programs should be distributed to other authorities and that they would take care of it.
Just a week ago, the government had released almost half of the ministry employees.
