Approach at AfD? Candidate Klöckner is planning a performance

Bundestag president
Candidate Klöckner wants to introduce himself to AfD

It would be a premiere: The designated CDU President Julia Klöckner offered to introduce herself to the AfD parliamentary group. Wouldn’t it be an appointment problem.

There has never been: the AfD in the Bundestag receives the candidate of another party for an interview. But now it could actually happen. The CDU MP Julia Klöckner would also like to stop by the Bundestag president before her election at the faction with which her party would otherwise rather have nothing to do.

A spokeswoman Klöckner confirmed information from the star: The CDU MP had “offered all factions to be available for a performance in the respective parliamentary group meetings”. A spokesman for the AfD parliamentary group also explained that Klöckner had asked.

The election of the Bundestag Presidium is scheduled to take place on Tuesday to constitute the new parliament. Already in the morning the AfD faction meets for a session in which Klöckner could take part. Unfortunately, there is an appointment problem: the traditional ecumenical service takes place in parallel.

The AfD is flexible

“Ms. Klöckner will take part in the service,” said her spokeswoman. “An idea of the AfD faction cannot be realized due to schedule.”

However, the AfD is flexible. She offered Klöckner to appear at the parliamentary group on Monday evening. “If it would be a small and real step towards normalization,” said parliamentary managing director Stephan Brandner the star. The MPs would then decide for themselves whether they choose Klöckner.

The CDU had recently sent contradictory signals to the AfD. At the end of January, the CDU/CSU decided together with AfD and FDP for tightening migration policy. At the same time, the Union faction said that the AfD must also be able to fill parliamentary posts.

But since the Bundestag election, the Union has emphasized the demarcation against right wing. CDU boss Friedrich Merz ruled out that the AfD can occupy the post of a Bundestag Vice President. He will “not recommend an AfD MP or an AfD member to a government office,” he told the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”.
