Putin and Macron discussed security guarantees

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, February 8, at a press conference following talks in the Kremlin with French leader Emmanuel Macron, said that Moscow’s main concerns in the proposals for security guarantees were ignored.

“During the talks, we continued to exchange views on Russian proposals addressed to the United States and NATO on providing long-term legal security guarantees,” the Russian leader said.

At the same time, the head of state stressed that “the central concerns, unfortunately, were ignored in the responses received on January 26 from the US and NATO.”

However, Putin thanked the head of the Elysee Palace for his participation in solving security problems and for efforts to resolve relations between the Russian Federation and NATO, and also announced his readiness to discuss ideas for resolving the crisis in Ukraine.

The talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron began on Monday evening in the Kremlin and lasted more than five hours. Putin emphasized the development by France of principled decisions on security issues. The French president also pointed out the importance of dialogue with the Russian Federation for security in Europe.

After meeting with the Russian President, the French leader intends to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev on February 8.
