Despite the ban on demonstration, people in major Turkish cities venture onto the street. They protest against the arrest of the Erdogan rival Imamoglu. He speaks via X.
According to recent information, more than 340 people have been arrested on Friday evening for nationwide protests in Turkey. After the controversial arrest of the Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu, people took the street third in a row.
Despite the prohibitions on the demonstration, they gathered in the cities of Istanbul and Ankara. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya wrote on platform X of a total of 343 arrests. Before that there was talk of 97 arrests.
Imamoglu is considered the rival of state chief Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Together with many other people, Imamoglu was arrested on Wednesday, a few days before his planned nomination as a presidential candidate of the largest opposition party Chp.
He is blamed with terrorist and corruption. Oppositioners see the government behind it that intends to eliminate a political competitor.
Imamoglu speaks of political coup
Imamoglu condemned the investigation in an X-Post on Saturday as “political coup” and added: “I call my people. With your support, we will first thwart this coup, and then we will continue to send those who let us experience this.” Imamoglu is to be brought before a court today.
In the meantime, 56 social media users were arrested for unrest under the accusation of the assessment, as the state news agency Anadolu reported.
