Before the constituent session, the AfD determines a candidate for the office of Bundestag Vice President. In the two past election periods, none of their candidates received a majority.
In a meeting on Monday, the AfD parliamentary group will choose a MP from its ranks, which is to apply for the office of Bundestag Vice President. As a group spokesman announced on request, five men have at least expressed interest in a candidacy: Malte Kaufmann, Michael Kaufmann, Jochen Haug, Gerold Otten and Karsten Hilse. According to the spokesman, the five MPs want to communicate until the session who provides their choice internally. The new Bundestag is constituted on Tuesday.
So far no vice president of the AfD
After the Bundestag election on February 23, the AfD provides the second largest parliamentary group in parliament and has already registered its claim to fill a vice presidential post. Since her first moving into the Bundestag in 2017, she has not been represented in the parliamentary president. So far, all AfD candidates for a Vice President have not received the required majority.
The CDU chairman Friedrich Merz said in an interview at the end of February: “This office is a state office”. At the time, he said to the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”: “And I will not recommend the Union faction to vote for an AfD MP or an AfD member to a state office.”
