Against the popular opposition politician Ekrem Imamoglu is determined for suspicion of terrorism and corruption. His arrest already triggered nationwide protests.

The Mayor of Istanbul and important opponent of head of state Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ekrem Imamoglu, must be custody. A Turkish court ordered this, as the state news agency Anadolu reported.

Imamoglu was arrested together with dozens of other people on Wednesday, a few days before his planned nomination as a presidential candidate of the largest opposition party CHP. Imamoglu is made terrorist and corruption allegations in two procedures.

The arrangement of the pre -trial detention was initially associated with the corruption investigation. Against 106 people are determined in both procedures. Prevention is also ordered against Imamoglus consultants and many others. Imamoglu rejects all allegations.

The CHP chairman Özgür Özel had called the arrest of his party friend a “civil coup”. Erdogan’s party defends itself against the accusation and called him the “summit of political unreasonation”.

Nomination Imamoglus further planned

Regardless of the allegations, the CHP wants to capture the planned nomination Imamoglus as the party’s presidential candidate today. In the nationwide vote, 1.7 million party members of the CHP are called to give up their vote.

Imamoglu is the only candidate. Observers classify him as a promising challenger of Erdogan, but the investigation can prevent his official candidacy. The next regular presidential election is scheduled for 2028.
