The Israeli government has passed a vote of no confidence against the Attorney General to remove her from office. But she doesn’t want to step back.
Israel’s cabinet spoke in a lawyer Gali Baharav-Meara on Sunday. Justice Minister Yariv Levin immediately asked Baharav-Miara to resign. Serious disagreements prevented an effective cooperation between the government and the highest law enforcement officer. He announced consultations with the committee responsible for the appointment of the Attorney General.
A proposal for the dismissal of Baharav-Meara should be discussed. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government accused the government -critical demonstrators of raising important state institutions. The Minister of Justice preserves the Attorney General to politicize her office and to hinder the government.
Israel: Baharav-Miara repeatedly opposed government
Baharav-Meara had repeatedly made up against decisions by the Netanyahu government. The general prosecutor’s elevation is expected to take months due to high hurdles. The dismissal of the head of the domestic secret service Schin Bet, Ronan Bar, had triggered massive public protests. Against the release stopped by the Supreme Court on Friday, the
Attorney General levied.
On Saturday night, Netanyahu published a video in which he justified the dismissal of Bar and rejected allegations that he wanted to thwart a Schin-Bet investigation into the allegations about financial connections between Qatar and employees of his office. Instead, the Schin-Bet examination was designed to delay BARS expected resignation due to mistakes in connection with the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
On Sunday, thousands of Israelis had taken to the streets again to demonstrate for negotiations on the release of the hostages in the violence of Hamas and against the government. “We are here to make it clear that Israel is a democracy and will remain a democracy,” said 46-year-old Uri Ash in Tel Aviv. “We will overthrow this government because it ruins Israel.”
