They mostly flee from fighting like in Sudan and arrive in Egypt without everything. The UN refugee agency UNHCR supports refugees in the bare essentials. The money is now missing for medical help.

Due to drastic medium-cuts, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has hired medical care for refugees in Egypt. Around 20,000 patients are affected, and treatments are about cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure or heart diseases, says a UNHCR spokeswoman in Geneva. The organization can only finance emergency aid in the event of an immediate danger to life. Many of those affected fled Sudan before the fights.

A total of more than 900,000 refugees are registered in Egypt. You can go to Egyptian doctors, said the spokeswoman, but many lack the money for it. Aid organizations such as doctors without limits are also used in the country that offer services to refugees for free.

In addition to the United States, other countries have also announced cuts in their development aid material, including Great Britain and Germany. The United States has frozen a large part of its expenses and have not yet decided whether and how much of it is released. It is the first concrete, comprehensive reduction in services for refugees that UNHCR has informed about since freezing the US funds.

The elimination of the US funds weighs particularly heavily because the United States has so far covered around 40 percent of the UNHCR budget. In 2024 they gave a good two billion dollars (around 1.85 billion euros). According to the organization of Germany, the second largest donor was around $ 333 million before the European Union. The UNHCR has already dismantled 400 of its over 20,000 jobs.
