The editor-in-chief of “The Atlantic” is accidentally invited to a secret chat from the US government. There are exact details about the attack plan on the Huthis.
After the security breakdown in a group chat of rank-high US government agents, the US magazine “The Atlantic” published a chat course via attack plans on the Huthi militia in Yemen in full length. In the screenshots of the chat published on Wednesday, numerous details such as precise attack times and the aircraft used are included. According to its own statements, the decision was made after the government of US President Donald Trump had repeatedly denied that secret information had been exchanged in the unsettled chat. However, it sounds different in the chat.
“12.15 f-18 fighter jets lift”
On the day of the attack, Defense Minister Pete Hegseth sent a long message to the group that the weather was cheap. “Just confirmed by Centcom (A central committee of the US armed forces for the Middle East, editor’s editor)“We have the go for the mission,” wrote Hegseth and added a schedule:
“12.15 f-18 fighter jets lift
13.45 The first time window for the attack begins (the goal is in the known position, the attack should be on time) – at the same time the fight drones start
14.10 Further F18 fight jets lift
14.15 combat drones are at the destination (here the first bombs are definitely dropped)
15.36 The second attack of the F-18 jets starts, the first Tomahawk marching aircraft will start from the sea “
Hegseth then announced further information and pointed out that you currently also have the green light at Opsec. With the security concept, sensitive data should be protected against unauthorized access – posted in the same chat, in which a journalist reads. US Vice President JD Vance replied: “I will pray for a victory”.
Trump’s security advisor Michael Waltz also recognized that this information is quite sensitive, who then hired that the news should automatically disappear after four weeks. It was also Waltz who gave the first update about the attack: “The first goal-her top rocket man-was identified positively when he went to his girlfriend’s house. The house has now collapsed.” Vance reacted with a single word: “Excellent”.

In the evening, Hegseth informed the group members again about the state of affairs: “Centcom was precise. Grandios job of everyone. There will be further attacks for hours this evening, and I will submit a complete report tomorrow. So far we have been on time, precisely and have achieved good results so far.”
High -ranking government members in chat group
Members of the group chat were the top management heads on the national security of the United States: In addition to Hegseth, including Trump’s deputy JD Vance, Trump’s national security advisor Mike Waltz, the head of the US foreign intelligence service CIA, John Ratcliffe, and the secret service coordinator Tulsi Gabbard. Waltz had set up the group and added the Goldberg journalist.
It is already a break with the usual security standards that high -altitude government members replace sensitive information about the commercial app signal. The fact that details were discussed there about an upcoming military strike – in addition to the eyes of a reporter, whose presence nobody was aware of, is considered a security failure of immense extent.
The editor-in-chief of the magazine, Jeffrey Goldberg, was accidentally invited to the group chat in the group chat and was able to read the plans for the upcoming US military campaign in Yemen there live. He later made the dramatic security failure public with a long article. Since then, the Trump government has been in need of explanation-which is only intensified by the new details.
Trump government insults journalists
The “Atlantic” magazine had initially only quoted in part from the chat history, but the military details from the security of US soldiers exuberantly left out the military details. However, Trump, Waltz and other participants and leading government members publicly claim that no confidential information was shared in the chat. Hegseth also vehemently denied “war plans”. Instead, they discredited the “Atlantic” and its editor -in -chief.
The magazine therefore opted for the publication of the delicate military passages. “There is a clear public interest in disclosing the type of information that Trump consultants have exchanged in uncertain communication channels,” wrote the magazine on the grounds-especially because the Trump government is trying to downplay the importance of the news. Before the publication, various government members were asked if they had objections. Most would not have reacted. The white house was against the publication.
Trump’s security advisor Waltz once again replaced the new details and wrote about the new unveiling on the platform X: “No locations. No sources and methods. No war plans.” In addition, foreign partners had already been informed about the upcoming attacks. The White House still sees no reason to act. When asked about possible personnel consequences, the spokeswoman said President Donald Trump continued to trust his national security team. Trump’s position is unchanged.
A statement by the Pentagon states that the “Atlantic” spread misinformation. It is a “miserable attempt” of the magazine to distract from Trump’s security policy. The additionally published chat news confirmed that no secret information had been shared. Hegseth only informed the group about an ongoing assignment that had previously been communicated via official channels.
US soldiers in mortal danger?
Democrats and experts evaluate the spread of such concrete information on an immediately impending military strike through a messenger service that does not begin to meet the security standards for the exchange of such information, but as a complete taboo break, the soldiers who were involved in the use.
A former spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defense from the term of office of the Democrat Joe Biden, Sabrina Singh, on X, Hegseth had disclosed the course of the entire operation and the aircraft types before the operation even took place. “He jeopardized the life of our combat pilots. Details like these are secret. I am absolutely stunned.”
In mid-March, the US military had attacked massive positions of the Huthi-Miliz in Yemen in mid-March. The military strokes against the Huthi have continued since then. The militia dominates large areas in the region and especially in Yemen. After the outbreak of the Gaza War between Israel and Hamas in October 2023, she started attacking the Jewish state out of solidarity with the Islamist terrorist organization with rockets and drones. They also started with attacks on ships – especially those with alleged connection to Israel – along the coast of Yemen on one of the most important sea routes for world trade.
Internal discussion about external presentation of the attacks
In the chat, the senior government members also discussed with heated how the attacks against the Huthi should be represented externally – and whether the most Europe does not benefit for its trade if the shipping streets in the region were made safe again.
So Vance wrote: “I just hate to help Europe out of the term.” Hegseth replies: “I share your disgust of European Schmarotzen. That is pathetic.” Elsewhere, Vance openly doubted whether his boss Trump was aware of how the campaign arrives with a view to his other course to Europe: “I am not sure whether the president is aware of how much this contradicts the current messages about Europe.”
